Guitarist David Gilmore fronts a quartet with pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Brad Jones and drummer EJ Strickland through post bop originals, demonstrating a taking of the baton from John Scofield in terms of sound and application of modern tones.
Most of the tunes are originals, with the team hard hitting on the assertive and modal pieces such as “Hocus Pocus” and “Free Radicals” which features Jones’ busy drums rapidly coaxing Jones and Perdomo to create an avalanche of energy. Jones and Strickland get rocking with Gilmore laying down some intricate lines on “Metaverse” and Jones lays down a hip line with Strickland brushing like a home plate umpire on “The L ong Game”. A read of Sam Rivers’ “Cyclic Episode” radiates heat from the ride cymbals and Bill Evans’ Interplay” has playful interplay with Gilmore at his most lyrical. Electric and electrical.
