Allegra Levy: Lose My Number

Flexible and bop toned vocalist Allegra Levy interprets compositions of trumpeter John McNeil, who sits in a couple of songs with the regular team of pianist Carmen Staaf, bassist Carmen Rothwell and drummer Colleen Clark. At times, Levy gives hint of Annie Ross, with a bright and clear enunciation as she works the hairpin turns of boppers like the intricate title track and hep “C.J.”. With McNeil, she gets quirky and elliptical on “Strictly Ballroom” and cascades on the assertive “Zephyr”. Pierre Dorge strums his ukulele to the cozy and quaint “Ukulele Tune” while Levy herself is breathy and poetic with Staaf on “Livin’ Small” and the delicate “Tiffany”. Flexible femininity.
