Pianist and composer Zen Zadravec leads a team of Todd Bashore/as-ss, Derrick Gardner-John Douglas/tp, Kenny Davis-Mike Pope/b and Mark Whitfield Jr/dr for some vintage hard bop sounds. Zadrevec shows strong hands as he throw red meat chords to Bashore’s ravenous alto on “The Nature Of All Things” while the team gallops through “Mentor Disciple”. On soprano, Bashore is impressionistic with the leader on the pretty “Jamiliap” and floats around Davis’ solo on “Lillies and Roses” while his tenor is rich to Zadrevec’s chords on a lithe read of the classic “Soul Eyes”. Dylan Bell adds voice to a blue “Climb” and boogalooing “Live!” with the instrumental team thoughtful on the closing “Human Revolution”. Optimistic ventures.
