This big band may come from NYC, but they sure sound like they stayed awhile in either Kansas City or Memphis, as they’ve got the steady southern swing down pat. You’ve got a steady Basie beat with John Bauers on gravely vocals, concise piano and either Mike Weisberger’s beefy tenor or atrumpeter Bryan Davis to sizzle on two takes of “The Late, Late Show” to bookend the album. Some dry rubbed ribs of Ray Charles’”Lonely Avenue with Kyle Koehler’s organ , John DiSanto’s bari supporting Bauers at the mic as well as on “Mary Ann” and Joe Taino’s cooking guitar get things good and swampy. The B 3 h ums on a soulful “I Love The Life I Live” while sizzling R&B on “I Don’t Know” while the clarinets wail and the brass plunges on a hip take of Duke Ellington’s “The Mooch”. The one nod to NYC takes place with Aubrey Welber tapping into his inner Earl Bostic on a searing “ Harlem Nocturne”. These guys keep the blue plate specials piping hot.
