Spanish Harlem Orchestra: The Latin Jazz  Project

All star cameos come and go like an Agatha Christie film on this exciting album that has pianist Oscar Hernandez lead a 13 member band with 2 vocalists. The team is filled with punch and enthusiasm, bringing out the best in the guests. The brass is bright for support of vocalist Kurt Elling and alto saxist Miguel Zenon on the Afro Cuban arrangement of “Invitation”, while the horns punch like Oscar De La Hoya in support of saxist Bob Franceschini on the sizzling “Acid Rain”. Tom Harrell’s lithe horn bounces through the peppy “Las Palmas” and Bob Mintzer saunters with his tenor through the percussion discussion of “Bobo.” The vibes ricochet from Joe Locke on “Latin Perspective” and the leader gets a chance to shine on a festive yet shaded tone of  “Round Midnight” while festive on “Descarga De Jazz”. A flag waver!
