One of the most musically flexible and cheerful drummers, Matt Wilson does a group hug with bassist Chris Lightcap, cornetist Kirk Knuffke and Jeff Lederer on saxes, clarinet and the piccolo, the piccolo. The material is as wide ranging as the moods and colors, displaying the talents of Wilson’s flexor and extensor carpis and digitorums. He gives a big shuffling beat for Lederer’s beefy tenor on Gene Ammons’ “The One Before This” while showing double time speed on the hand faster than the eye for Knuffke on the brisk “In The Moment” while the two get frisky as the beat goes on for “Sunny and Share”. His brushes are as suave as Astaire’s taps on the soft and mellow “Every Day With You” while he is as upbeat as Kelly on the funky title track. Most playful is when Lederer picks up the licorice stick and hits the trailer for a finger snapping “King of The Road” while the team sounds like they’re sitting in the back room of the Chemistry class as they play around with the words of President Trump’s words on the Zappa-cartoonish “Space Force March/Interplanetary Music. The closing “Goodbye” is a cheerful embrace adieu. Do they do birthday parties?
