The Mark Harvey Group: A Rite For All Souls

Recorded from a 1971 performance at Old West Church, Boston, MA, this complete and unedited performance on two discs the quartet of Mark Harvey on brass instruments, Peter H. Bloom on woodwinds, and the percussion team of Craig Ellis with Michael Standish performing two “acts” of free form music and recitations. Ellis does a couple lectures/ readings with Standish handling one part of the “Story” as well, while the under two hour show mixes flailing drums, complex and aggressive trumpet, searing clarinets, screeching tenor making effects with the mouthpiece and even some tinny piano musings. The high pitched reeds and brass will definitely get your dog’s attention, while some eerie atmospheres are a perfect soundtrack for Night Shadows. Surprisingly, it is not dated at all, as many things I’ve heard these days are just as loose and intuitive as this. Cacophony endures.
