Warm-toned trombonist Shawn Bell leads a dynamic trio with organist Mitch Towne and drummer John Kizilarmut through this 5 song EP of originals and covers. The team likes to play with dynamics, giving a big one-two punch before digging into a cool groove on “Everlong” and getting post boppy on the driving “Homage” with Towne throwing in some hip Larry Young influences. Bell’s brass works well on a bold and beautiful take of AL Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and slides into a deep sermon after Towne’s intro to the gospel tinged “Prodigal Son”. As with all things in B3 trios, the swamp is the thing, and the three boogaloo with delight on “Electrophobia”. Sticks to the ribs.
