Usually associated with the free form sax of Ivo Perelman, pianist Matthew Shipp shows he can (literally) go it alone on this wide ranging, personal and accessible collection of crafty originals. His fingers are a wonder, able to show strength, elasticity and control but not at the expense of losing sensitivity. Some of the pieces, such as “Piano In Hyperspace”, “Emission” and “Tone Pocket”, while differing in moods, all display a romanticism akin to vintage Bill Evans. Other times, there is an Errol Garner’d joy to the sparkling “Land of the Secrets”, and Monk is never too far away on the bluesy “Swing Note In Outer Space” with a ton of fun angles. A bit of bluesy splash in “Void Equation” and saloon player on “Clown Pulse” convey rich strides, while the closing “Cosmic Juice” has his dark left hand arguing with his ambling right in a wondrous confrontation. Personal and presentable.
