Sounds reminiscent of vintage Blue Note sessions, with a bit of modernization, are created here by bassist/composer Fred Randolph, teamed with a front line of Erik Jekabson/tp-fh, Sheldon Brown/ts-fl, Greg Wyser-Pratte/dr, Dan Zemelman/p, Greg Sankovich/keys, Silvestre Martinez-Brian Rice/perc and Dillon Vado/vibes. The horns dig in nicely on muscular boppers like “On The Upside” and “Nouveau Monde” with a nice latin feel with Randolph’s tough tenor on ‘Mr. Now”. Relaxed pulses, rich piano and Brown’s flute sways on “Unaware” with some nice soloing by the leader on “Strange Game”. Randolph’s electric work is felt on the bluesy “T Bone Slide” and the team gets soulful on “Todd’s Idea”. Good grooves.
