Evelyn Rubio: Crossing Borders

Vocalist and alto saxist Evelyn Rubio delivers a wide ranging rhythmic album that includes rootsy guitarist David Grissom, (John Mellencamp) and Josh Sklair of Etta James fame. You get some swampy Memphis stews, therefore with a gritty voice and attitude on “One More Last Time” and “Still On Your Side” while some 70s Doobie Brothers rock is prevalent on “Just Like A Drug”, “That A Way To Go” and “When You Say You’re Sorry”. Her sax is gorgeous on the ballad I Don’t Understand” and she does a clever take along of “Besame Mucho” as she turns it into a back porch Delta blues with Terry Jerome’s harp and Josh Davison’s slide guitar, while the team mixes salsa and boogie on the shuffling “Cruel”. Lots of spices in this rib sauce.
