David K. Mathews plays a wide range of keyboards and organs as he teams up with a core group of Ray Obiedo/g, Dewayne Pate/b, Kevin Hays-Billy Johnson/dr a mix and match horn section as well as a rotating team of all star vocalists on a tribute to vintage soul sounds of the 60s and 70s (with the first volume being standards). If you grew up with these tunes, it’s a hoot to hear them modernized up, as with “One Mint Julep” mixing the classic Ray Charles intro with Space Cowboy Steve Miller adding some funky vocals into the mix. Likewise, Funky Fred Ross goes Fabulous Flamey on “I Got You “I Feel Good” while Glenn Walters uses his Barry White baritone on a rich “Going Out Of My Head”. Most clever is a take of “Wichita Lineman” interpreted by “Amikaeyla”, who also does some soul-searching on The Isley Brothers’ “For The Love Of You”. Don Cornelius would smile at this one.
