Here are two ladies that take you to cozy night clubs. Nothing fancy, just a relaxing and unpretentious evening out.
Pam Tillis takes you to Nashville with a rotating team that includes Joe Pisapia/g-b-key, Pat Buchanan/g, Jamie Dick-Brian Pruitt/dr an and other vets of the Moose Lodge and VFW on this collection of mostly originals. Except for the spacy and impressionistic “Karma”, most of the tunes have a folksy and blue traditional feel, with a STAXY mood on “Lady Music” and some C&W with steel string on “Dark Turn Of Mind” while “Bitter Friends” is a thoughtful journey along the Nashville Skyline. A peaceful easy feeling.
Marshall Chapman sings and plays guitar like it’s an evening set at McCabe’s Guitar Shop with Will Kimbrough/g, Neilson/dr and Dan Mitchell/key, all switching around on bass. She travels a dark and ominous road on Leonard Cohen’s “Tower Of Song” and casts a long shadow with guitar effects during Bob Seger’s “Turn The Page”. She turns a Spartan page on a sepia-toned “I Still Miss Someone” and with steel strings waltzes through “Tennessee Blues” while sounding vulnerable on her own on “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” before taking you to church on an earnest “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands”. Nice fitting Wrangler jeans.
