Sebastien Ammann’s Color Wheel: Resilience

Sebastien Ammann plays piano and Fender Rhodes as he leads a team of alto saxist Michael Attias, trombonist Samuel Blaser, bassist Noah Garabedian and drummer Nathan Ellman-Bell for subdued post bop originals. Ellman-Bell’s mallets or delicate for the soft “Yayoi” and keep the pulse somber on “Koing Korn Revisited” while the Monkish title track has some fun kinetic moments with the horns surrounding Ammann’s clever piano musings. Ammann’s fingers ripple like a stream around the floating horns for “Untangled” and his keys get into a soul mood after Attias’ warm intro to “Castello di Traliccio”. Most abstract are the dots and dashes of the team for “Pedestrian Space” with the team getting sing-songy after the leader lays out a rich opening on “Afterthought”. Misty morning musings.
