Rory Block: Prove It On Me

Veteran blueser Rory Block gives a tribute to some of the ladies in blue of the past on this album that has her revisiting and reviving tunes from the likes of Helen Humes, Ma Rainey and Memphis Minnie. She plays all the guitars, percussion and sings with a growling abandon as she gets sassy on  Merline Johnson’s “Milk Man” and defiant on Rainey’s “Prove It On Me”. As with the blues, gospel is never too far away, agonizing on “Motherless Child” and giving some rich harmonies for a Sunday morning take of Arizona Dranes’ “I Shall Wear A Crown”. Block’s guitar playing is spot on, picking and grinning while shouting “work it” on “It’s Read Hot” and boogie-ing with passion on “He May Be Your Man”. Finger  picking good!
