The core team features Piela’s warm alto on herky jerky pulse of “Enchente” while the team bops on “El Bosque”. With the extra brass, the ensemble sizzles on the samba’d “The Journey of Maracatu Man” and is bluesy for “Brasilio (Mr. Gafieira)”. Blatti adds a chanteuse mood in English for “Starla” and is honeyed in Portuguese for a gorgeous read of the classic “Black Orpheus”. Vintage and new sounds served on a percolating plate.
