Aruan Ortiz brings piano and his rich voice along with drummer Andrew Cyrille and percussionist/vocalist Mauricio Herrera for a collection of free flying and loose themes that give a feel of traditional folk music. The ten songs are bookended by a mix of tribal percussion and vocals on “Lucero Mundo” and the earthy “Para ti Nengon”. Sandwiched between are dark piano musings with cymbals on “De Cantos y Nanigos”, splashing ivories on the ominous “El Ashe de la Palabra” and an avalanche of percussion during the two parts of “Inside Rhythmic Falls”. The songs feel intuitive and spontaneous, creating a non-structured feel that goes into uncharted waters, like you’ve taken a village road after driving on asphalt.
