I’m not the guy to tell you the difference between the flugelhorn and trumpet on listening, as I’ve heard trumpet men play both with nary a palpable difference. Andre Canniere plays both in a rich post bop team with vocalist Brigitte Beraha, Tori Freestone/ts, Rick Simpson/p-key, Tom Farmer/b and Andrew Bain/dr. The tone is big and dramatic on a soulful “Colours” and declarative “One More Down:. With the brass muted, a dark and lurking “Arrival” works well, while the team gets funky with Beraha in a bohemian mood for “Suicides” and “My Star”. The sole instrumental has both horns pleading on “Endure” with the team in a hip hop heaven on a gentle “My Star”. Indie and beatnik jazz tones.
