If you have young kids, and want to inspire them to practice their scales, give them a listen to seven year old Sophie Fatu, who sings with confidence and boldness on this ep of standards with LA’s finest. Of course, she’s not going to interpret songs from her vast catalogue of life’s experiences, but she actually sounds like a young Jimmy Scott, clear and earnest on big band pieces such as “(Love Is) The Tender Trap” and a shuffling “Goody Goody” supported by no less than Jeff Hamilton/dr, Church Berghofer/b and Tom Ranier/p. She gives a strong solo intro to the pretty “Feeling Strong” and is finger snapping on the perfectly suited “ High Hopes”. Give this kid a gig at Knotts!
