If trumpeter Jason Palmer is a portend of the future of jazz, I’m ready to sign up. He brings together vet Mark Turner on tenoralong with younger vets and up and comers Joel Ross/vib, Edward Perez/b and Kendrick Scott/dr for a two disc marathon 2 day 2019 set of concerts in New York. The music is uniformally post bop and filled with charming swing. Palmer’s tone is reminiscent of vintage Kenny Dorham-warm, not overbearing and oozing with lyricism, serving as a perfect front line with Turner’s sandied tenor with Ross’ vibes sliding in and out between evertying. The songs are mostly dedicated to artists, such as Degas and Rembrandt, with a reflective pulse on “La Sortie de Pesage” and relaxed charm on “Cortege aux Environs do Florene” with a soft bop on the flexible “A French Imperial Eagle Finial”. Scott deftly drives “Christ In the Storm On The Lake Of Galilee” and bops on “Three Mounted Jockeys”. Most of the tunes range from 9-15 minutes, so everyone gets a chance to show their wares, and the solos never overstay their welcome. This is reminiscent of the classic Blue Note jams with Dorham or Night of the Cookers. Check this one out!
