Jeff Benedict plays alto and soprano saxes as he leads a quartet with guitarist Dave Askren and a rhythm team of bassist Jonathan Pintoff and percussionist Chris Garcia as the Wayne Shorter songbook is visited and given fresh interpretations. Material from the Miles Davis period are well represented with Benedict’s soprano flying over nimble percussion on “ Fall” while “ESP” teams him on alto with a hip pulse provided by Askren’s guitar licks, while “Paraphernalia” is in a funky soul groove. The two produce rich duets, with Benedict’s alto gently swaying on “Mikayo” and the soprano floating around the tender strings on “Infant Eyes”. Impressive tribute that stands firm on its own.
