50 GIANT YEARS…Gentle Giant: Unburied Treasure

Gentle Giant has recently released a 30 disc (!) box set of concert material from their vast cache of recordings. This band was well known for being a force to be reckoned with in concert, as they used their clever and intricate songs as starting points for wondrous musical journeys on stage. The sound quality varies between albums, but you get a sense of their tight cohesiveness on pieces such as “Alucard” from their earliest album, a stomping “Octopus” in 1973, the rarely performed “The Runaway” complete with shattered glass on a Basel gig in 1975 and a dramatic “Just the Same/Proclamation” from their popular Power and Glory in 1976. They were a fascinating team to see live, and while I don’t recommend taking this in at one sitting, the samplings reveal just how fertile the 1970s were for jazz/rock.
