Jerry Bergonzi: Nearly Blue

Beefy toned tenorist Jerry Bergonzi forms an organ trio with B3-er Renato Chicco and drummer Andrea Michelutti in the mode of vintage Larry Young Blue Note sessions. Chicco is a clever choice for this outing, as he brings in elliptical and thoughtful  harmonies to the impressionistic read of “It Might As Well Be Spring” and a noirish “Laura”, while sounding like Jon Lord of Deep Purple on a Bergoni’s misty “Tectonic Plates.” Michelutti is nifty on the brushes as Bergonzi sashays on “How About You” and a cleverly and agonizingly slowed down read of John Coltrane’s “Countdown” oozes with calm while the team goes bel canto on “We’ll Be Together Again”. A double time’d “On Green Dolphin Street” has the leader dig in, and his sound fills a room for his “While You Were Out”. Black and white in blue colors.
