JAZZ UKELELE…Jake Shimabukuro Trio: Jake Shimabukuro/Nolan Verner/Dave Preston

Jake Shimabukuro plays acoustic and electric kamaka ukulele, and there is no hint of gimmick or novelty to it as he teams up with Nolan Verner/b-p and Dave Preston/g with both partners playing percussion on this gorgeous and fragrant session. Thick electric tones sound urgent on pieces such as “When The Masks Come Down” and the textural “Resistance”. With more acoustic environs, sounds akin to mandolin get folksy on the wanderlust of “Summer Rain” and the take of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” is right out of the Cumberland Gap. The strings dramatically build up on the thoughtful lament, with Rachel James adding a Stevie Nicks-ish vocal to the Fleetwood Mac tune “Landslide”. The flexibility of sounds and moods is remarkable, going from adventurous trajectories to comfy back porch strummings. Check this one out.
