GREASED LIGHTNIN’…Tom Gilberts: Old School, Leroy Ellington’s Sacred Hearts: Live and Kickin’ It

Journeys down dusty roads…

Teamed with drummer Brian Foxworth and bassist Dave Captein, guitarist and singer Tom Gilberts plays a guitar with an allegiance to Robin Trower and a dash of Steve Miller on voice with some blues rocking originals in a wide collection of blues. His soulful voice works well on the Chicago girt of “’Lady’ Luck” and the team boogies like there’s no tomorrow on the shuffling “Brown’s Camp” and instrumental “Zoot Suit Shuffle”. The guitar strings slide on the two stepping “Old School” and the fuzzy tones of “Nighttime” or the chunky “My Paper Bag” make for a greasy ride. A streetwise band of three.

Blue eyed soul is served by Leroy Ellington who sings and plays a bit of tenor sax along with Mix Gise-Marcos Sastre/g, Mike Grosser/b, Charlie Fletcher/key, Josh Parker/dr and a mix of background singers and smoking horns on this live set of rocking blues. Ellington sings with the rasp of a corner carney for the shuffling “Three Easy Payments” and slinks with the guitars on “Until We Meet Again”. The horns deliver Memphis pulses for the rich “Why Me” with Ellington blowing away the blues on “Heaven Don’t Want Me” and  the boogie-ing “Doghouse”. The rhythm team rumbles on “I Wanna Tickle Your Fancy” with the guitars wailing for the ballad “Gravity”. Thick pulses.
