Gerald Becket plays both flute and alto flute in a mix of settings as he teams with Ruben Salcido/as-ts, Noah Frank-Larry Douglas/tp, Ari Caprow/g, Steve McQuarry-Terry Rodriguez/p, Carl Herder-Paul Federighi/b, Greg German-Fred Johnson/dr and Vincent De Jesus/perc on a rich mix of originals and modern covers. Without drums, he creates a Mozartian chamber feel with Frank on the dark and lovely “Doom” whereas German supplies an easy swing on the traps for the bopping “Down Low” and teams with De Jesus for a Latin cruiser of “Spirit Song”. Salcido’s alto gets funky for “Shacktown” with McQuarty flexing his fingers for “Club Raven” and taming with German to canter together on “Waterfalls”. Beckett himself is all aglow throughout, floating on the pretty ballad “Ode To Ray Wood” and richly bouncing on the post bopper “John Neely-Beautiful People”. Strong winds on the horizon.
