TRIO MUSINGS…Tim Ray: Excursions and Adventures

Pianist Tim Ray brings together all stars in the names of drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and electric/acoustic bassist John Patitucci for a mix of originals and some clever covers. What stands out most on the latter is a muscular take of The Rolling Stones piece “Paint It, Black”, and it works amazingly well with Patitucci grilling the undercurrent. He definitely has an allegiance to full-fisted Monk ideas, having fun with “Trinkle Tinkle” and gives a nice gospel feel on Billy Preston’s “Nothing From Nothing”. The three lurk wonderfully on  the leader’s “Yo 11” and give a funk feel to Patitucci’s “Messiaen’s Gumbo”. Lots to like here.
