Led by the bright and soulful alto and baritone saxist Richard Underhill, Crazy Time boasts of a 3 tenor sax front line of Kelly Jefferson, Matt Lagan and Mike Murley to join with him, supported by the nimble rhythm section of bassist Mike Downs/Mike Downes and Stich Wynston.
The feel of the band takes you to vintage Tower of Power, with the peppy horns riding over the sleek bass lines as Underhill briskly bops on “Cat Walk” and the funky “Makin’ It Right”. The saxes create a texture akin to The World Saxophone Quartet, with some angular kineticism on “Have A Good One” and the snappy “Let It Go”, both featuring the leader in a rasp rap vocal. Downes and Wynston create a bopping “Night In Tunisia” feel on the deep “Wondering Heart” while creating a waltzing souled groove on “Even Demons Get The Blues”. Funkified reeds.
