Over a half century since his initial Brasil ’66 (and who DIDN’T have a major crush on Lani Hall back then?), Sergio Mendes still sounds fresh and exotic on this latest album that includes guests and a ton of modern modern stars. R&B-ish vocals by Common are featured on the celebratory material like “Sabor Do Rio, with some hip hoppy horns supporting Gracinha Leporace as she sings on “Samba In Heaven” . Mends’ keyboard work is soulful as he backs Joe PIzzulo on “Love Came Between Us” and he sizzles on “Romance In Copacabana.” The album has a high production sound, feeling very bright and alive like you’re taking in a show, so don’t expect subtlety; bring your dancing shoes!
