Drummer Mark Segger brings together a three horn front line of Jim Lewis/tp, Peter Lutek/ts-cl and Heather Saumer/tb as the create rich textures as well as clever excursions. Segger’s rhythm team of bassist Rob Clutton and pianist Tania Gill (also on melodica) create a wide swath of forms, bopping along on the angular “For The Bees” and playing peek-a-boo on ‘Bassline” and “…”. Some lovely harmonies float on the tipsy “Cluttertone News” while long tones stretch out like Turkish Taffy for Clutton’s musings on the sustained “One Note”. The horns are in unison for a charge on “ #18” and get jagged for the choppy “Lift Off”. Clever and creative and almost as cohesive.
