Lafayette Harris Jr.: You Can’t Lose the Blues

Pianist Lafayette Harris Jr. sounds like he’s taking the torch passed on from the likes of Harold Mabern, John Hicks and Cedar Walton. He’s got big hands filled with swing and lyricism, demonstrated on this rich album in a trio setting with drummer Lewis Nash and bassist Peter Washington.

The Max Roach alumnus has bebop in his bones as he drives around like a Maserati on the cooking classic “Bloomdido” and the calypso’d take of “Blues For Barry Harris”. With Nash’s brushes, he’s cozy on “Wonder Why” and gets into a gospel groove on the swaying title track. With Washington’s bowed bass, he’s wonderfully bel canto on “I Love You Yes I Do” and on his own his rich and bluesy on a fervent “Please Send Me Someone To Love”. His guy has the feelin’!
