The golden voice of males with a microphone…
Tenor vocalist JD Walter mixes piano arias with Jean-Michel Pilc, Julius Rodriguez, Orrin Evans, Taylor Eigsti, Marc Cary and Jim Ridl alon with support by some cameo guests on this intimate, personal and heartfelt release. He’s earnest, clear and classy with Eigsti on his own “Dressed In A Song” and glows with Cary on “Brother John.” With drummer Obed Calvaire, bassist Ben Wolfe and Becca Stevens on charngo and backing vocals, he gives a flowing and misty treatise to “The Last Muse.” Of the covers, he and Evans deliver a darkly hued “What The World Need Now” and a freely formed dramatic take of “You Go To My Head” with the album closing with a crystalline “ All Through The Night”. Songs that go bump in the night.
Rich voiced Anthony JJefferson is a throwback to the sophisticated and romantic soul of Ben E. King on this album which has him surrounded by rich strings and or horns supplied by Corey Allen. He’s got a bel canto vibrato on romantic pieces such as Al Jarreau’s title track, the lush “Marnie” and the rich “Besame Mucho”. The saxes and big band sound give him a Vegasy R&B push on “Willow Weep For Me” and some pop Nashville with guitar supports Jefferson on a pop “Rainy Night In Georgia” with glistening notes in a starry night with Allen’s piano on an aria take of “Summertime”. Big sound and heart.
