Brian Scanlon: Brain Scan

Taking time off from his chair in Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Ban, Brian Scanlon brings his alto and tenor saxes to lead a hip collection of LA Cats through some rich post bop material. He’s anchored by all star drummer Peter Erskine and bassist Trey Henry, rotating pianists Tom Ranier and Ed Czach with guitarists Larry Koonse, Avery Scanlon, Andrew Synowiec and percussionist Joey De Leon through rich material. He takes on the classic “Harlem Nocturne”and gives it more of a Spanish Harlem feel with Erskine propelling the groove. Scanlon’s tenor is palpably warm with Koonses guitar on “Mark’s Time” as well as with Synowiec on the lovely “Not Watching (For Nancy)”. His muscles are flexed on alto for the post bopper title tracks, with some clever segues running through the pieces, while Erskine giving a nice calypso feel to a bouncy “El Entrometido”.  Ranier’s ivories and Erskine’s brushes breeze like wind chimes on “ I Hear Something” and  Czach gives some bluesy bop licks for Scanlon on “Scandalized”. This is the kind of music that LA deserves to hear at the local venues.
