Baritone vocalist Sam Fazio shows strong storytelling skills as he takes some clever material and gives it a late night/last set feel. He’s got a great sense of timing and nuance as he puts himself in settings ranging from duets to small combos. Duets with the Debussyesque piano of Chris White give an intimate and soft “Reverie” and a bluesy stride with some clever harmonies by Fazio on “S’Wonderful”. He gets conversant with the easy swinging guitar of Tim Fitzgerald on a personal “Teach Me Tonight” while a rich duet with bassist Tuck Andress results in a poetic take of “Eleanor Rigby”. Relaxed and unrushed, Fazio sounds comfortable supported simply by Michael Peloquin’s harmonica on the spacious “Pure Imagination” while the two get folksy on Tom Waits’ “Downtown”. In a small group setting, he gives a Nashville read of the old timer “Do You Want To Dance” and gets hep to the jive on “My Baby Cares For Me” with piano, drums and some doo wopping vocal support.
