Michael Waldrop: Triangularity

Drummer Michael Waldrop leads a trio from behind with pianist Vlad Girshevich and bassist Eric Thorn on a collection of self-penned tunes. Hints of vintage Bill Evans trio is felt with the Waldrop on brushes and Girshevich deft on the ivories on the classy “2-2-2” and the team relaxed on the bluesy “Longing” with some nice ride cymbal guiding the way on “Ivana.” Thorn does some nice work as he’s featured on the soft “Belgrade” with the team bopping on a crisp “Twisted Barb” and getting in a Monkish mood on the kinetic “Doo Dat Tang”. A different team turns up for a couple of bonus tracks as tenor saxist Michael Rosen on the Brazilian “Banja Vrujci” and the hip mellow swinger “Try Angularity”. Strong modern moods with a classic feel.
