Lafayette Harris Jr: You Can’t Lose With The Blues

Here’s some timeless piano sounds by Lafayette Harris Jr, teaming with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash for a rich mix of blues, bop and standards. Harris’ touch is uptown and classy, giving full bodied chords to “He’s My Guy” romantic on “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying” and stately on “I Wonder Why.” He shows his blues hues well, melding with some nice work by Washington on “I Love You, Yes I Do” and getting into a hip shuffle during “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be” while bopping in a Monk mode on his own “The Juicy Blues.” A duet with the bassist on “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” is gorgeously reflective, while his solo aria on “Please Send Me Someone To Love” is both earnest and earthy. His touch only comes from a feel that is in the bone, and this marrow doesn’t lie.
