Pianist Joey Alexander is now at the phase where he is past being the latest “thrill” of being the “latest” new thing as a child prodigy. Now, he has included in the list of pianists like everyone else, needing to prove he is something beyond a musical novelty. This album with bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Kendrick Scott and guests Luisito Quintero and Anne Drummond on percussion and flute, respectively, goes a long way to prove he’s got something to say at any age.
The most impressive aspect of Mr. Alexander is that he doesn’t overplay his hand (literally) of displaying pyrotechnic chops. Quite the contrary, he comes off as a piano version of an impressionist painter, using space and light with judicious wisdom, coming off as a disciple of Ahmad Jamal. His timing teamed with Scott’s brushes and Grenadier’s bass on “Mosaic Of Beauty” as his lyrical bouncing around his sticks on “Lonely Streets” demonstrates mature digital prowess. Full hands on the reverent “’Tis Our Prayer” is lovely and reverent and he creates pastel atmospheres with flute and percussion non “The Light”. A solo read of “Affirmation I” is a classy and thoughtful excursion, while a trio “Affirmation III” percolates with joy.
Not only is Alexander’s technical touch noteworthy, but his composing skills throughout reveals a strong grasp of the pen. None of his pieces are blowing sessions, but are well crafted structures that give ample room for soloing without breaking stride. Keep them coming!
