IN GROUPS OF THREES…IN Trio: Cascade, Negroni’s Trio: Acustico, Graewe Reijseger Hemingway: Kammern I-V

The IN Trio, consisting of Harvie S on bass, Christian Finger on drums/percussion and Tim Armacost on saxes, alto flute and electronics weave back and forth between atmospheric moods and post bop pulsations. With Armacost on flute and electronics, you get some spacy moods on “Cascade” and the arsty “Waterfalls” with some nice bowing by S. Contemplative environs take place with a rich soprano sax during “Island” and the warm ballad “Now I Know” with Armacost on tenor sax. “S leads the way on a bluesy “Green Doll’s Phone” and gives a hip line to the easy feel of “Goode Ole Days.” The team is melancholic for “Bass Guajira” wit Finger pushing the cymbals along for the modern sounding “Alawain.” Subtle sounds.

With drummer Nomar Negroni and pianist Jose Ramon Negroni, bassist Josh Allen fills out the trio that mixes Latin moods with vintage jazz. Jose Ramon has a bit of a Bill Evans lyricism on the pretty “Cantando” while he dances with Allen on “I Remember you.” The team gets into an Afro Cuban pule on No Me Voy De Aqui” and gets hip to Bud Powell’s “Tempus Fugit” with bass and drums digging deep. A solo by Jose Ramon on “Maria Cervantes” is a gorgeous rhapsody and his solo intro to “Cycles” is filled with romanticism. This is a rich and flowing work of three deep souls.

The trio of Gerry Hemingway on drums and marimba, cellist Ernst Reijseger and Georg Graewe on piano team up for five “Kammer” pieces. The material is fairly free form, with some Bartok like bowing vying for attention against the cymbals on “”IV” with jabs and pokes on “”II”. Sounds like a duck call and eerie bowing make up “III” and free and loose “I” with piano abstractions in abundance. Intuitive playing is predominant.
