DEEP REEDS…Baritone Madness: Baritone Madness

The triple bari front line of Pat Velliveau, Keith O’Rourke and Gareth Bane take you to the musical version of the La Brea Tar Pits on this bopping session that is as thick as a London Fog. Don’t be intimidated, the reeds are swinging!

Don’t ask me to tell who is playing what and when; just take my word for it that these guys are not only heard, but felt. Supported by a bopping rhythm section, the three steamroll through pieces like “Ready And Able” and “A Long Time Coming” like an avalanche from a Looney Tunes special. The muscles are flexed on “The CB Shuffle” and get modal on the tenor madnessy “Turbulant Trane”. The take of Charles Mingus’ “Moanin’” is a palpable mass of bop, while the team gets velvety on the warm and mellow “The Angels’ Share.” If they go on tour, check them out and wear a fireproof jacket!
