It’s ironic that music as free as jazz would label itself as “socialist”, as jazz was verboten in Communist countries. Besides, try asking Prokofiev or Shostakovich what they thought of the government directing their music. But, alas, I digress…
Chelsea McBride plays tenor sax as she leads a large ensemble through a collection of her compositions. The Progressive Party platform is sung by Alex Samaras, with a small group foundation of Chris Bruder/p, David Riddel/g, Steven Falk/b and Geoff Bruche with a sax and horn section in strong supply. Themes ranging from bipolar disorders, presidential debates, the #MeToo movement, relationships , the economy and the God of our era, the environment are all addressed here.
Musically, the themes range from Carl Stallings-inspired kineticisms on “The Righteous and the Wicked” and “House On Fire” to big brooding moods on “Revolution Blues.” Trumpets cry on “Ballad of the Arboghast” and rich guitar and pianos create a warm atmosphere on “The Void Becomes You.” Music for the Millennials.
