Brandon Robertson: B.O.A.T.S

The clever acronym of Brandon Robertson’s album stands for “Bass’d On A True Story” as the leader directs a mix and match team through some hip originals. Robertson shows his wares on the solo “Maven’s Arrival” which is filled with warmth, while he delivers a swining line for pianist Mason Margut on “East of The Son”. Tenorist Lew Del Gatto gives a big sound to a swaggering “The Next Thing To Come” and creates a formidable front line with a Lee Morganish trumpeter James Suggs on “Majestic Nights” and a New Orleans stomper “Phat Friday”. Robertson bows delightfully alongside vocalist Noelle Robertson on “Lullaby For Noelle” and gets into a Soul Train mode with Avis Berry on “Better Days Will Come.” Encouraging sounds and tones.
