Okan Ersan: Nibiru

On the back of the sleeve, this album is labeled “A 42 minute uncharted perspective of the Universe.” Nothing like ambition!

Guitarist Okan Ersan has a sound that mixes jazz and rock akin to Larry Coryell, with drummer Volkan Oktem sounding like he took his Neil Peart as they team with bassist Eylem Pelit and keyboardist Serkan Ozyilmaz for seven “Chapters”. The journey goes from spacy fusion with hard drumming reminiscent of vintage Weather Report to some hip high hat work on “As Far Away As Possible” before Oketm overdrives into some synth sounds for “Deep Field.” Travels into the ionosphere take place on “Transcending” with the leader crating some gentle musings before getting into a rock mode on the title track. The team veers between tight jazz-rock fusion and flailing at anything that looks like something from another planet. Almost going where no man has gone before.
