Bassist Matthew Snow leads a Charles Mingusy band of David Gibson/tb, Clay Lyons/as, Joe Doubleday/vib, Dakuke Abe/g and Wayne Smith/dr through a collection of fervent originals. The moods sway between the cool kineticsm of Doubleday as on the glistening “Venus” and sleek “Amber Glow” with butter ‘bone from Gibson to a swaggering “The Exit Strategy” that has the team lurching and bumping along a rural road. Smith goes hippety hop for Lyons for “Blitza” and the team floats on a laconic ballad “Jealousy.” The team has a “live” feel that keeps things organic.
