French pianist Franck Amsallem teams with large toned tenor saxist Irving Acao, bassist Viktor Nyberg and drummer Gautier Garrigue for eight thoughtful originals and a cover. Of the latter, Acao mourns and sighs on the deep reeds of “Last Night When We Were Young,” whereas he’s hip on the mid tempo and crisp “From Two To Five.” Amsallem teams well with Nyberg as they canter on “A Night In Ashland” and he’s suave as a sunset for “Hamsa” and pretty on the pink “In Memoriam.” The team gets into a modal mood on the elliptical “Standard Form” and slips into a goes into a funk groove on “Baton Rouge.” Post bop impressionism.
