Yazz Ahmed plays trumpet and composes music that mixes jazz, Arabic sounds from her Bahraini heritage and melds them with “sacred poetry, sacred hymns dance and eloquence” on this ecumenical album. The sounds travel from a New Orleasns feal on the passionat “Lahn Al-Mansour” to a somber trudge of “One Girl Among Many.” The rotating musician ensemble includes soulful guitars and keyboards on “Deeds Not Words” to melancholia percussion and sighing horns on “2857.”Musical messages.
The band Captain Supernova takes a spacey soul journey on this latest. Mixing rock beats and synthesizers they bring in guest violinist Mark de Clive-Lowe for the travelling “Voyage To Nowhere” while vocals by Natalie Oliveri and Angela Muhwezi” add R&B feel to “Aquarian Dreams” and “It Begins” respectively. Stark keyboards, electronic oozings and military drumming make tunes like “Reveal Within” and “Closer To You” a trip to the galactic empire of Motown. Soul Train meets Star Trek.
