Slim Gambill: Fake Jazz & Theme Songs

Best known for his work with Lady Antebellum, guitarist Slim Gambill shows tasty chops on this album that mixes rockish R&B and some jazz licks on a decalogue of his own tunes. He’s got a team of support with Justin Glasco/dr, Matt Wigton/b, Mike Rojas/key and a collection of backing horns and various guitar guests. Of the latter, Chris Nix and Isaac Hanson bring out their axes along with the leader on a fun jamfest of “4 Guitars Having A Conversation Over Cocktails.” Some more hip groves take place with pianist Kenneth Crouch on “Also Shuffle,” with some Hendrixy guitar vibe felt from Gambill’s strings as he teams with saxist Jeff Coffin on “54321.” Gambill and company sound like an early version of the band America on the folksy “62 Victory Blvd” and get down to some rock on “Last Time Around” and “Lyla Marie.” Impressive tunes by a guy with a heart with the right rhythm.
