Paul Zauner’s Blue Brass featuring David Murray: Roots n’ Wings

Trombonist Paul Zauner leads a swinging horn heavy team of Mario Rom/tp, Clemens Salesny/as-bcl, Klemens Pliem/ts and a rhythm section of Carlton Holmes/[p, Wolfram Derschmidt/b and Dusan Novakov/dr through a collection of tunes mostly from the pen of legendary David Murray, who also plays tenor sax and bass clarinet to boot.

Murray has never sounded so wonderfully mainstream as his mustang chops are slightly reigned in by the other horns. He’s still a strong force, and the compatriots still get fun and frisky on Murray’s bopping  “OBE” whle the do a fun table dance on”Spoonin.” Novakov lays down a New Orleans funk fest on “Scooter” and swings hard on the festive title track. Murray is stark on Salesny’s “Jeckyll & Hyde”  and warm and fluid like honey for “Hongkonkg Nights.” This is a chapter of Murray’s life worth re-reading!
