There have been many tributes to Nat Cole during his 100th Birthday celebration; this one may be the most creative. Orice Jenkins’ voice is not a copy of Cole; he’s got a mid range tenor, for some reason reminiscent of Nina Simone, that is flexible and elastic. It works amazingly well, though, as he cuts and pastes classic tunes in a wide variety of settings. He begins with a simple spartan finger snap for beat on a hip “Let There Be Love” and keeps on going up through a CTI soulfest of “Smile.” Jenkins is respectful, but he doesn’t fawn, giving a stark “Stardust” as he accompanies himself with a lonely piano and gets into a tender and intimate “Inseparable.” He does rich chamber work with strings on “Nature Boy” and “Mona Lisa” and is artsy for “For All We Know.” His voice has a perfected pace, always guiding the material along. A good call, and close to unforgettable.
