MOANIN! The Joshua Breakstone Trio: Children of Art-A Tribute to Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers

Guitarist Joshua Breakstone trios up with drummer Eliot Zigmund a,nd bassist Martin Wind to give a blue plate special tribute to the Blue Note Record sound of hard bop master and talent scout Art Blakey, who would have turned 100 this year. The groove and big beat of drummer and Art Blakey was just a small aspect of his career, as he was also the “college” of scores of jazz artists, as he encouraged composing skills of  the likes of Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Benny Golson and Cedar Walton, as demonstrated on this swinging session. The trio gives a hip pulse to “The Witch Doctor” while Wind delivering a nice bass line to “Splendid.” Breakstone’s tone is tensile and rich, bouncing  to Zigmund’s ride cymbal on “El Toro” and lovely on “Lonely Woman.” Guitar and bass hold hands through Breakstone’s own title track, with Zigmund’s brushes dancing like Astaire during “Holy Land.” The true Freedom Rider!
