Pianist Mark Sherman p lays to his strengths and comfort zone of hard bop on this red meat of a session with Vincent Herring/as, Nana Sakamoto/tb, Ray Drummond-Dan Chmielinski/b and Carl Allen/dr. The tunes are either from or inspired by the halcyon days of sounds from Riverside and Blue Note records.
Herring is bright and beautiful as Sherman gives a bluesy saunter to Horace Silver’s “Juicy Lucy” and the horns are suave over Allen’s brushes on John Lewis’ subtle bopper “Milestones.” Sakamoto slides well after Sherman’s trio intro to his own “Devotion’s Dance” and is dark on the assertive post-modern “Primative Reality.” A trio read of “Ev’rytime We Say Goodbye” has rich interplay between Sherman and Drummond, and the whole band cooks on the Butanes for “The Cup Bearers.” Mainstream with a strong current.
